Summer 2016 Half Day Workshops

Join us in August for these three-hour workshops focused on how to stay engaged with one another across differences or when topics are charged.

Tuesday, August 16, 2016
9:00 AM—12:00 PM
Student Community Center, Meeting Room D

How do we connect as a community in light of the issues where we disagree strongly, such as income inequality, immigration, affirmative action, freedom of expression, same-sex marriage?  How can we explore shared meaning without giving up our own identities?

Come to this workshop to understand how the practices of dialogue can bridge differences, how deep listening allows us to be changed by what we learn, and to practice these skills in a dialogue with other members of the UC Davis community.

Daunting discussions are those where emotions run high, opinions vary, and much is at stake.  Sound familiar to your work, home, or community?  This 3-hour workshop covers key concepts and vital tools from conflict resolution, neuroscience, and organizational leadership to increase capacity for you, your team, and your unit to have successful difficult conversations.

This session includes topics such as reasons daunting discussions may veer into unproductive conflict, how to prepare for a crucial conversation, and tools to use in an effective difficult conversation.

These workshops are taught by Carolyn Penny, a mediator with 30 years of experience and Director of Campus Dialogue & Deliberation.

Workshops are open to staff, students, faculty, and other academics. Registration is free, but space is limited and participants are expected to register with a commitment to engage fully for the entire workshop.
