UC Davis Mariel Vázquez Advance Scholar Award
About the Program
Named in honor of Dr. Mariel Vázquez, professor of Mathematics and Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, this award recognizes the achievements of UC Davis faculty for outstanding scholarship, a demonstrated commitment to the UC Davis Principles of Community, and the University of California’s mission to educate all of our undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.
The Center for the Advancement of Multicultural Perspectives on Science (CAMPOS) is a faculty center in the office of Advancing Mentoring and the Professoriate (AMP) in the Division of Inclusive Excellence (IE). CAMPOS supports the discovery of knowledge by building an inclusive environment that values diverse and innovative perspectives, creates opportunities for networking and mentorship, and focuses on faculty career success and retention.
We invite nominations for Academic Senate UC Davis faculty that are making a substantial, positive impact through their research in communities inside and outside the university. This award is also meant to draw attention to and properly recognize the impact faculty are making in ways or areas that might be overlooked in the standard merit and promotion process at UC Davis.
The Advance Scholar Award, which has recognized outstanding faculty since 2016 and renamed in 2026, honors Mariel Vázquez, a professor of Mathematics and Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at UC Davis. She was a member of the inaugural cohort of CAMPOS faculty and served as Faculty Director from 2019-2023. Vázquez committed her professional life to advancing research and creating opportunities for her colleagues to succeed.
Each year we select one awardee who will receives $1,000 and recognition at the annual Advancing Mentoring and Professoriate Awards Ceremony.
Nomination Procedures
Nominations may be made by any UC Davis faculty, staff, graduate students, or postdoctoral scholars. Individuals wishing to nominate a faculty member will need to:
- Provide a nomination letter indicating the contributions of the nominee to outstanding scholarship and impact in communities outside the university;
- Provide a curriculum vitae of the nominee;
- E-mail the requested materials to Thomas O'Donnell ([email protected]).
