Overview

Our programs and actions are driven by a desire to foster a community of faculty who conduct research to discover knowledge and create solutions to the world’s most pressing problems. To achieve these ends, we support career advancement through mentorship and networking; a work environment that integrates policies and practices reflecting a campus climate welcoming to all; and research to understand barriers and catalysts to multicultural perspectives in higher education.

In addition to exceptional records of research and teaching excellence, successful nominees will have demonstrated commitment to and an accomplished track record (calibrated to their career stage) in teaching, research, and service that reflects an understanding of our multifaceted undergraduate population at UC Davis and advances the ideas articulated in the UC Davis Principles of Community.

Successful candidates will articulate a clear vision for how their work at UC Davis will continue to contribute to the University’s mission of serving the needs of our multicultural student population, many of whom come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds or are first-generation students in their families. They must also demonstrate an understanding of the exclusionary barriers that prevent full participation by students whose socioeconomic backgrounds have placed them at a disadvantage in higher education, adversely affecting their potential for academic success.

Applicants’ track record of engagement and activities promoting the achievements of others, as well as their plans as a professor for future engagement with a student population that is markedly disparate, will be a significant part of the overall evaluation of the candidate’s qualifications for a Faculty Scholar award.

We define “Inclusive Excellence” as an emphasis on creating a work environment where each person is recognized and developed, and talents are routinely tapped; valuing people because of, not in spite of, their differences; taking steps to move toward an environment that is equitable for all; and seeing human equity as an essential element of sustainable competitive advantage or organizational effectiveness.

Eligibility

AY2026-2027 Standard Selection

Deans may nominate candidates who have accepted a position for a UC Davis Academic Senate faculty position that is at least a 50% tenure-track/ladder-rank position within the current recruitment cycle/academic year.

Provost Recruitment Selection

Deans may nominate candidates who have been interviewed for a UC Davis Academic Senate faculty position that is at least a 50% tenure-track/ladder-rank position and for which selection by CAMPOS or CAMPSSAH can be used to improve the employment offer for exceptionally desirable candidates. In such cases, the hiring dean must contact the Provost to make the case and request. Following the Provost’s approval and notification to the Associate Vice Chancellor of Advancing Mentoring and Professoriate, the appropriate faculty director will convene an ad hoc selection committee to review the required materials listed below. The selection committee’s work generally requires 10-14 days after receipt of the nomination package, after which the AVC will inform the Provost and the Dean of the committee’s recommendation.

If you have any questions about the eligibility of a nominee, please contact the relevant faculty director (CAMPOS, Verónica Martínez-Cerdeño, [email protected]; CAMPSSAH, Juan Diego Díaz, [email protected]) with a copy for both to Thomas O’Donnell ([email protected]).

AY2026-2027 Standard Selection

The Selection Committees will meet in June and evaluate the nominations and forwards their recommendations to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, who makes the final selection. Faculty Scholars are announced in the summer (July-August) and formally inducted in fall.

Provost Recruitment Selection

Upon notification by a dean of a job offer for an exceptional faculty candidate, the appropriate Faculty Director and Associate Vice Chancellor will convene an ad hoc Selection Committee to expedite a review of the nomination materials and make a recommendation to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs to offer a CAMPOS/CAMPSSAH allocation to the candidate.

Assessment of Nominations

Nominees will be evaluated in their efforts to achieve inclusive excellence in three ways: their Awareness and Sensitivity, Accomplishments, and Future Plans and Directions in each of the three categories for which UC Davis faculty are evaluated: research, teaching, and service.
