“Professors Leveraging A Community of Engagement (PLACE) with CAMPSSAH”

is a University of California Office of the President 2020-2022 Advancing Faculty Diversity through Improved Climate and Retention grant under the direction of Kimberly Nettles-Barcelón.

The goal of PLACE is to promote the development and retention of faculty by providing resources and programs in three areas: community, leadership, and recognition.

PLACE is an interdisciplinary hub for research activities for faculty whose work forms the foundation of inclusive excellence at UC Davis.

At its core, PLACE will consist of writing communities in various forms led by the Principal Investigator (Nettles-Barcelón) and in collaboration with outside experts. These writing communities for selected CAMPSSAH Scholars and Faculty Affiliates, will meet for two quarters during the academic year and for a week-long off-campus writing retreats. They are opportunities to engage across disciplinary boundaries and ranks to create a “third space” of engagement among the participants.

The grant will also enhance resources for faculty participants at various junctures in their career trajectory with manuscript workshops, post-tenure start-up funds, and supplemental conference travel grants for childcare expenses.

Writing Community

Academic year 2021-2022 nominations will begin to be accepted October 5 through November 19th, 2021

Professor’s Leveraging A Community of Engagement (P.L.A.C.E.) with CAMPSSAH is opening the call for a small group of 4-5 faculty, to engage in a bi-weekly, two-quarter writing support group. We seek to create a small interdisciplinary group of faculty. We are particularly interested in Associate Professors working on a second book-length proposal although all Academic Senate or Federation faculty are eligible to apply. All scholars must be engaged in work that centers a critical, intersectional lens – particularly focusing on issues of race, gender, sexuality and class inequalities.

Selected faculty must commit to active participation in the writing group for the winter and spring 2022 quarters which may include sharing, reading and commenting on each other’s work, and providing a report about the work completed or progress made at the end of the spring quarter. Participants will also have access to a professional writing consultant to work with individually on your projects.

Over the course of the two quarters (winter-spring 2022), this writing group will focus on developing a book-length manuscript proposal for academic and cross-over presses. The writing community will be assisted in its facilitation by Elena K. Abbott of Ink Blotter.

Upon successful completion of the writing group, participants will receive $3,000 in Academic Enrichment Funds, which can be utilized to hire a GSR to support their research.

A 1-2 page letter of interest specifying what you are working on. The letter should also include:
- Specify press(es) of interest for your book
- Days of the week with most availability for meetings (virtual in winter; spring virtual TBD)
- Any planned absences in the winter or spring 2022 quarters
CV (2-page max) listing both publications and service done within the past three years.

Her consulting business, Ink Blotter comes highly recommended from fellow academics and writing consultants. Scholar of the Quarter

The Scholar of the Quarter is an initiative through the Center for Multicultural Perspectives on Social Science, Arts, and Humanities (CAMPSSAH), funded by an UC Office of the President “Advancing Faculty Diversity” grant.

The Scholar of the Quarter award is based on research that clearly demonstrates that faculty gain the most job satisfaction when their work is recognized by their peers as valuable.

P.L.A.C.E. with CAMPSSAH will recognize three faculty this academic year at the Assistant or Associate ranks whose scholarship epitomizes “engaged excellence.”

We are accepting applications for the entire academic year now and will announce one recipient at the end of each quarter.

Graduate students, post-docs, and faculty are invited to nominate faculty scholars. Please visit our webpage for more details and award requirements.

We define engaged excellence as scholarly or creative achievements that involve diverse communities with a commitment to social change. Successful applicants may have accomplished one or more of the following:

Development of innovative curriculum which engages diverse student populations with collaborative work in communities
Demonstrated long standing commitment to advocating on behalf of underserved communities
Impactful creative/scholarly work which brings awareness to critical issues facing marginalized communities locally or globally
Research that challenges “normative” disciplinary boundaries

PLACE will amplify the contributions of the Scholar of the Quarter around campus through the Center and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Recipients will be asked to provide a brief, engaging narrative presentation about the work they do which advances engaged excellence at UC Davis. Nominators may also be asked to contribute to the presentation. These presentations can happen in real-time and/or virtually (on the CAMPSSAH website). The Scholar of the Quarter will receive a $1,000 Academic Enrichment Fund as well as a certificate of recognition.

Manuscript Workshop

Applications due May 31, 2022

The PLACE Manuscript Workshop will make financial resources available for a selected faculty at a key transitional moment in their career. Getting a project from rough draft to published manuscript is one of those moments at the Associate level in the humanities and social sciences. This process can be facilitated by focused, critical readings by scholars in one’s field.

PLACE will offer a grant up to $5,000 for one UC Davis faculty in the 2021-22 academic year.

Modeled on similar, successful initiatives such as the UC Humanities Research Institute (UNHRI), the grant provides financial resources for the award recipient to convene a one- to two-day workshop that brings together chosen experts in the scholar’s field to help prepare a manuscript for submission to a publisher.

Application Details
This opportunity is available for any associate, ladder-rank faculty in the social sciences, arts, or humanities working on their second book/creative project towards promotion to full professor. We will give preference to CAMPSSAH and P.L.A.C.E. faculty or affiliates.

Applicants must submit all required documents:

Project Title and Manuscript Abstract (200 words maximum)
Project Description (2,000 words maximum)
1. Overview, including a summary of the project, its current stage in the revision process, and why the workshop will be helpful at this particular time.
2. Timeline for Publication, including when the first draft will be completed, when the workshop will be held, and when the final manuscript will be submitted to a publisher for a contract or publication. The manuscript workshop must take place within one year of the award announcement.
3. List of Proposed Participants, including each participant’s name, campus or affiliation, and relevance/contribution to the workshop. One participant must be from another UC. (Given the possible difficulties of securing participation from others, please include names of potential substitutes.)
Proposed Budget
1. A line item budget worksheet
2. A budget narrative (500 words max) that explains how estimates were determined. Funding must be spent in accordance with all applicable UC rules and regulations.
One to Two Chapters from the book project (up to 30 pages, double spaced per chapter)

Summer Writing Symposium

APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED to MAY 2, 2022*

Professor’s Leveraging A Community of Engagement (PLACE) with CAMPSSAH is opening the call for the second Summer 2022 Writing Retreat. PLACE will host a small group (5-6 faculty) to engage in a weeklong writing retreat.

This writing retreat in late summer is geared toward faculty working to complete a big task (e.g. writing an introduction, a book proposal, or a chapter in a book project) and who would benefit from uninterrupted, concentrated writing time, and structured feedback by peers and a professional writing instructor within a setting where their meals and lodging are provided.

All Senate faculty are eligible to apply, with preference given for faculty who are CAMPSSAH Scholars or CAMPSSAH Affiliates working towards tenure or at the associate level. Applicants must be engaged in work that centers a critical, intersectional lens – particularly on race, gender, sexuality or class inequalities.

Faculty must commit to active participation in the writing retreat; which includes sharing work, reading and commenting on each other’s work, and providing a report about the work completed or progress made at the end of the retreat. This retreat will offer writing consultant support from Ink Blotter and the Faculty Director of CAMPSSAH will also be in-residence.

The symposium will take place in late June or late August/early September depending on the availability of accepted participants at a Northern California location (within approximately 150 mile radius, TBD).

Post-Tenure Start-Up Award

Applications due February 25, 2022

Through the results of the COACHE survey at UC Davis (2017), within the UC system, and at universities across the country, it is known that the Associate Professor rank is one where job satisfaction plummets [1]. There is a statistically significant relationship between the length of time at the Associate rank and the intensity of dissatisfaction. Additionally, scholars in the humanities, arts, and social sciences are more likely to spend longer at the Associate rank than STEM-based faculty (Stewart & Valian, 2018:314, O’Meara 2017).

To help mitigate this issue, PLACE with CAMPSSAH will offer newly tenured faculty a “start-up” package ($4,000 Academic Enrichment Fund per grant, two per year) to assist them in the development of a new project or allow them to refocus their energies in ways more attuned with their desired career path within the university.

This package can consist of enrollment in the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (NCFDD) Post-Tenure Pathfinder’s Program or seed money for a new project.

Eligibility

During the two-year grant cycle, this package will be available to social science, arts, or humanities faculty who have received tenure after June 30, 2020. Some preference will be given to faculty who are already affiliated with P.L.A.C.E. or CAMPSSAH.

Application Details

Applications for the award must include a brief statement/proposal of the new project and how the funds would be used to support the project and its relationship to promotion. A request for funds to participate in the NCFDD program would require a one-page statement explaining why the program would be valuable for them. Those who receive the monies are expected to write a reflection on their use of the funds.

Review Process: Once application materials are received, they will be reviewed by the CAMPSSAH Faculty Director, the Associate Vice Provost of Academic Diversity DEI, and one designated member of Academic Affairs.
